With the project ?the social garden? the association INITIAL e.V. addresses itself to long-term unemployed and addicted humans, who suffer frequently from psychological illnesses and social isolation. Through the work in the garden nature and the contact to other affected people their everyday life gets a new structure and social connections. On arable land and in the greenhouse, they plant beds together, sow, plant, care for and harvest the seeds. Experts are currently leading the 35 participants. Socio-educational advisors are ready to help them find solutions to problems and perspectives for their personal development.
In 2009, the association revived a closed organic nursery in Karlsruhe-Wolfartsweiler. Today, the participants grow various herbs and vegetables here. They pay attention to a large variety and avoid artificial fertilizers. The gardeners themselves produce the plant boxes for the beds from used building materials in their own wood workshop. Each year, more plants are grown in the garden from their own seed production. In 2016 alone, the social garden was able to present 56 different tomato varieties and thus contribute to biological diversity. The harvest is donated to charitable institutions.
New contacts through interested garden visitors
"The Social Garden" invites local residents and school classes to visit the project and participate. The plants are signposted so that everyone can easily get to know the diversity of the crop world. At the same time, the visits help to promote the exchange with neighbours and young people and to enable the participants to have more personal contact with society. The social garden is a unique project supported by the city of Karlsruhe.
